When traditional dental care is difficult
Some patients need additional support because of disabilities, medical conditions, severe dental anxiety, sensory or behavioral challenges, or extensive treatment needs. Hospital-based care may make necessary treatment possible.
We review each patient's circumstances to determine whether this approach is appropriate. The hospital and anesthesia teams also evaluate patients before surgery.
Children and adults with disabilities

Medical complexity
Patients whose care may be better coordinated in a hospital, subject to hospital and anesthesia review.
Severe dental anxiety
When fear has prevented needed treatment and other approaches have not worked.

Sedation dentistry vs. general anesthesia
“Sedation dentistry” is a broad search term for approaches that help patients tolerate dental treatment. Options can range from nitrous oxide or medication to deeper levels of anesthesia.
Our focus is hospital-based dental care under general anesthesia. During treatment, the patient is unconscious. The hospital anesthesia team administers and monitors the anesthesia while Dr. Bingham provides the dental care.
We do not offer routine office-based IV sedation through this practice. A consultation can help determine whether hospital treatment is a suitable option.
Dental treatment during a hospital visit
When clinically appropriate, we aim to complete as much necessary care as possible during the scheduled visit. The treatment plan depends on the patient's findings and medical needs.
Exams, X-rays & preventive care
Dental examination, necessary imaging, cleanings, and other preventive treatment.
Fillings & restorations
Treatment of cavities and damaged teeth when restoration is appropriate.
Root canal therapy
Selected teeth may be treated with root canal therapy when indicated.
Extractions
Removal of teeth that cannot reasonably be restored or otherwise require extraction.

General anesthesia is deeper than the lighter forms of sedation often used in dental offices. Our practice focuses on hospital dental treatment under general anesthesia.
Who may need dental treatment under general anesthesia?
It may be considered for patients who cannot safely or effectively receive needed care while awake because of disability, anxiety, medical or behavioral needs, or extensive treatment. Suitability is determined individually with the hospital and anesthesia team.
